Actually the "Viet Cong" is a secret group of communists that under the lead of North Vietnam government formed in 1960. They were called Viet Cong because Viet Cong in Vietnamese means "The Vietnamese who follow Communism". Their frequently living place was the famous Cu Chi tunnel, near Saigon. The tunnel could withstand hundreds of B-52's bombing raids. Inside it was many people who follow them, they live, they sleep, they eat there. Women even gave birth inside the tunnel.
But Cu Chi wasn't the only place they lived.
And a thing I wanna tell you is: People don't know anything 'bout this shut the hell up! The Viet Cong communists were all voluntereers! When the Viet Cong could leave their homes and families to fight for freedom, the South Vietnamese government problem like men trying not to get conscript by the ARVN happened always!

Although many Viet Cong were from the North, a large number of southern Vietnamese were also Northern sympathizers. The Viet Cong lived largely in the South, and helped prepare the way for the North Vietnamese regulars sent down to engage the south, and the Americans.

It's important to understand that the viet cong weren't uniformed soldiers staying in cute little tents or barracks. The viet cong were guerilla fighters, and members of ordinary villages and towns. They lived in the same places that ordinary vietnamese citizens lived. There were cases where the rest of the members of a village weren't aware that certain neighbors were viet cong. There were extensive networks of tunnels as well that a great many of the viet cong used as living quarters mainly because they were relatively safe. The US could carpet bomb 10 square miles of jungle and these viet cong would simply hold up inside these tunnels. The viet cong were probably the most hypocritical of the the enemies that the US faced. They would work and live alongside US soldiers, collecting wages, hanging out, even on occasion going to bars etc. Then after nightfall, they would rig explosives or sneak attack groups of men. They weren't committed to a political ideal as much as they were to killing US soldiers. Many lived a glorious life at the expense of Uncle Sam, then used inside information to attack. They loved everything about the lifestyle, stealing US made cigarettes and beer, and chocolate, and rations, and gifts for the hookers, but were wound up tight about US presence in VietNam. Weird, huh?

The Viet Cong was a CIA monicer,NVA is what they were called. North Vietnamese Army,,,then Regular was added cause it was a guerilla war the NVRA and the NVA were like called two armies. They lived in their Country it was called Vietnam by French and Americans. Look at a map of Vietnam, then look at every country around it, they lived in Vietnam and all of those on the borders. That whole war was screwed up, but arent they all when a single country goes in to tell the citizens We have a better way to live, we been at this for 200years, you have tried your way for 2000yeras, but ours is better, now choose our way or die,,,,,,,,,,,,this is why people revolt.

All over both North and South Viet Nam and were often conscripted by NVA regulars by shooting mothers and fathers and little kids until the sons of normal people were forced to join their cause. Too deep and too much detail to go into on this site. You need to go to the Library of Congress' website at: loc.gov and post your questions there.
