Why did the Framer's of the Constitution believe that a divison of powers and a system or checks and balances were necessary in a government???

They feared a possible return to a monarchy, and in order to prevent that, they created three divisions in the federal government and instituted a system of checks and balances to insure that no one division (Executive, Legislative, Judicial) could become so powerful as to completely rule the country. It was their idea of protection against tyranny.

Because ultimate power corrupts ultimately! When just a few people or even just ONE person holds a huge amount of power, it often leads to corruption, greed, and short-sightedness in leadership. Dictatorships and monarchy are prime examples of this. When power is spread between many branches of government, any idea under consideration gets lots of attention and input from many different people. This also prevents a government from doing anything it pleases - there are too many people watching.

because they were afraid that a person would try to take control of the government and make himself a king. They didn't fight a revolution to remove one monarch and create another. They seperate powers so that one group couldn't take control. One branch had a set of powers, and if they started abusing that power, the other branches could "check" them.
