This silver tray is an antique, 1886-1900. It was packaged with small round bowls, hence the semi-circle dents.

Having been a mailman for 35 years;i would say NO! You did not say whether the package was INSURED. It would seem to me if indeed the contents where that VALUABLE it should have been insured;and possibly sent OVERNIGHT EXPRESS MAIL[yes it would have cost more but worth the price]

I would say that you needed to have the package insured to be able to make a claim. It is assumed that there is always a chance of damage in the mail. Either that or you should have chosen another method of parcel service.

You should have denied to receive it if the package is damaged, Open it in front of the delivery person and inspect if the package is damaged. If the package is not damaged than the seller is at fault.

It sounds like the packer took inadequate care. If its delivery was not insured, that person or company is the one to make restitution. Everyone knows that a "FRAGILE" label attracts accidents. If you or a relative packed it, no content insurance, you are up the creek, no paddle.

Sounds like it wasn't insured. Going to be hard to prove they did it.
