The job offer is in West Houston and pays 82k/yr with full benefits. I have seen jobs offered with the same degree for over 100K. This job is not in the oil/petrochemical industry or in the power industry. It is in R&D.

One great thing about Houston is the cost of living... homes are super-affordable, and many basic essentials are cheaper (like gas, which is $1.99/gallon today). So making $82,000 in Houston is like making $110,000 in Austin, or $300,000 in Los Angeles.

Not everything is cheaper, but with housing being the #1 expense people have in their lives, it sure makes everything SEEM cheaper.

That depends on the location of the $100K job. You do have to adjust for the cost of living.

Based on Salary.com, the median salary for an Electrical Engineer Level 3 (4-6 years of experience with a bachelor's degree in EE) is $93K. The same job in Houston is $81K.

Of course, the size of the company and industry are also important.

Do remember the cost of living. If you're planning on buying a house, it certainly will be easier in Houston than in San Jose, for example.

Hold out for a week and if they ask why say you need some time to think about it and look for other offers over 82K and nearest to where you live now, but if you are right out of school take it you could use the experience and then you could apply for another job after 5 years or so.

Very decent for Texas since the cost of living is a lot less. Do a geograpic comparison.
