The Dow is comprised of just 30 companies.

How can 30 companies, which show both gains and losses, reflect all of American business? Only one company shows an above two percent gain.
American Express Company 57.66 +1.14 +2.02% 10/10 4:01pm

Funny how this happens to be a credit card company, hey? I believe the headquarters is in the most Republican friendly state to boot. One hand washes the other...

Look to the Standard and Poor index. There you will see a better look at the health of the economy in real dollars and cents. Keep in mind also, this index reflects your 401 dollars. Shouldn't your eyes be on this?

Because liberals don't only focus on money.

The DOW being higher only makes the wealthiest of Americans wealthier, and liberals care about all Americans, not just the wealthy.

I can understand how that makes the conservatives happy. Increasing disparities between the wealthy and the poor is more of a Republican goal. Conservatives are more likely to care about money and imposing their morality (or lack thereof) on others, rather than social justice and personal freedom.

Liberals and other intelligent people aren't made happy simply by an increase in investor wealth. They are made happy by more important things like good schools, a physically healthy populace, a healthy environment, social justice and human equality. None of those issues are getting any better right now. On the contrary, health care is getting more expensive and less accessible. Ice caps are melting, green house gas levels are increasing, and the mpg of cars sold in america is going lower, on average. Women are being raped in the congo. People are killing each other in Darfur. Poor American citizens are starving here in the United States. Women are continuously having to fight to maintain the right to control their own bodies. Sexual minorities are losing the battle to be treated as equal citizens. We have a president who allowed a major attack on American soil, and refuses to take any responsibillity for any of his administrations failings: instead he claims God is directing his actions, and who wants to go against God's word?

Generally, things aren't as rosy as they were 6 years ago. This article - http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20061010/pl_nm/election_dc_1 - is making this liberal a little happier. Hopefully we will see some changes in January.

Also, because the stock market is only an indication of how big business is doing.
I don't care if execs are making money, only if middle-income (read:union) family people are surviving ... which, by and large, they aren't.

We are not depressed. The stock market loves the fact the American people are on to the Republicans. The stock market loves stability. We cannot have stability when we have lying, cheating, stealing, torturing, killing Republicans running the country.

Why all the questions about the mental state and mood of liberals.

If the conservatives are happy with themselves why do they care what we (liberals) think/feel/want?
