Right, do I understand this right? If I get 50 answers to a question and every single person gives me a thumbs up then I get 50 points?
1 point per thumbs up?
......but I don't lose any for a thumbs down?
shouldn't we be able to lose them as well?

No. That's not how it works.
You don't get a point for a thumbs up on a question.
Thumbs up points are given if your answer is picked as best answer then someone gives a thumbs up for that.
