Why does society view spanking children as taboo or abusive? Has it not been an effective child rearing tool for centuries?

Yes, and it's absense is what is causing many [most] children to turn into little terrors. I hate to think what I would have been like, if I'd been given the same 'freedom'.

I believe it is fine to spank a child, if the behavior warrants it. What makes it abusive is leaving marks, using objects instead of your hand. I think the reason people may think of spanking as taboo is because they have the most perfect children. People don't realize that some children actually need physical discipline.

I got spanked whenever I deserved it. I don't know why society is turning away from it, but it should turn back to it because many kids out there need a good spanking. My sister and I got our bare butts spanked by hand all through childhood when needed and we turned out just fine.

it is not specifically a child rearing tool, it is a disciplining tool, and its just a matter of choice, I personally donot find it abusive or taboo, I do not believe in beating a child, but a little swat on the but to correct the child is fine.

I believe spanking is okay but beating a child is not....there is a big difference and people just dont seem to get that....

yes it has . i turn out ok and so did my children's spank that butt it's ok as long as you don't kill them lol

Didn't hurt me any and I did not grow up to be violent because of it either.
