There are 4 boys living next door to me, ages 15 to 8, and they're always getting into our yard. They continue to climb our 6ft fence on a daily bases to retrieve toys and footballs they have thrown over. We have told them, on many occasions, they are NOT allowed in our yard and to stop climbing the fence, but it falls on deaf ears. They have damaged my plants, nearly hit my mom in the head with a ball, and have an overall disrespect for us and our property. How do we stop this behavior before it goes too far? Should we call the police every time it happens?

I would 1st have a talk with their parents explaining that this is serious concern of yours and that you will not be held liable should they hurt themselves while trespassing on your property. (yes, they CAN sue over an injury on your property) Make a note of the time and date and the parent(s) response just in case it has to go any further.

Put barbed wire on top of your fence....
Seriously, go talk to their parents about the situation and let them know that you would prefer they come to the front door and ask before retreiving items out of your yard!
OR
If you are outside and notice when something comes over the fence, you could pick it up and go in the house with it. That would force them to knock on your door and ask for the item back.
You really do not want to call the police on your next door neighbors (especially ones with rowdy teenagers) unless you have to. They can be vindictive.
Good luck!

If you told them over and over not to come onto your property and they continue to do it then here is what you can do:
1.) You can go to their parents and talk to them about it.
2.) Everytime they throw something over run outside and get it, place it in a giant garbage bag. Eventually they would have nothing left to throw into your yard. If they call the police saying that you are holding their stuff you can say that you have been warning them over and over not to throw stuff in your yard.
3.) You can install a video camera to capture them so that way if anything were to happen to them while they were in your yard it would be caught on tape so that way you won't be in any trouble since they were trespassing
4.) Get a dog. Not one that is vicious but a dog. Studies have shown that having a dog in the back yard whether a terrier or a pitbull is 80% more likely to keep people off of a person's property.

Tell their parents or tell them to get you to retrieve something they throw over. Make the fence of a style that you can't climb over. (like wood where there is no place to put your feet - just a solid fence with no spaces).

Be firm when you tell them! Also,
step to their mother and father. If this doesn't work, call the police or children services. If that doesn't work, throw everything that lands in your yard out. Get your things fixed that they destroy then take them to a
small claims court. When the parents start paying money, maybe they'll start obeying authoritive figures!! Good Luck!

yes you should ( the police will be slow to respond but they will make it clear to their parents that coming out over and over is not a good thing )
even better is to sue in small claims court for any damage and even for depriving you of the use of your property - that will made the parents take notice ( you sue the parents for the action of their kids )

I would want to talk to these kids' parents. Instead of complaining about what they have done to your plants and your nother first, mention that you are concerned about their safety. (scary them a little maybe saying if they fall and hurt themselves you are not liable) then tell them what they have done to your plants and your mother. If that does not work, call the police.

Yes, call the police, it will get through to them and their parents that they need to be responsible. Another thing to try is once it is on your property it is yours, start picking up their toys, and keeping them.,

well, in times like this, it's always good to follow the immortal advise of Ron White. "They're tryin' to pass a law now that says that if you're a convicted sex offender, that you should post a large, visable sign in your yard saying so, because we don't care about your rights anymore. i suport that wholeheartedly. i'd also like to know where to get one of those signs, because there are some kids that i'd like to get off my lawn." of course, the neighbors might think a bit diffrent of you then, but you have to admit, that would make a good joke at parties.
