When I click Start in the lower left hand corner, so that I can select "Restart" or "Turn off the computer", if I click Restart or Turn off the Computer, the computer will not restart and will not turn off. This is a Comaq Presario 5100 desktop which I bought new 6 years ago. I am running Windows XP Professional which I bought and installed about 2 years ago. It has been about one month since I rebooted, and at that time I think it rebooted just fine.
I am wanting to push the button in on the tower to turn the computer off, but am afraid the computer will not turn back on again.
Any comments ?

I am running AVG Free Edition.
I removed Norton AntiVirus about a year ago.
I have gone to Windows Task Manager to make sure all programs are closed down, but still cannot restart or shut down the computer by going to the Start button and asking it to Restart or Turn Off

Do you have like norton anti virus or internet security installed? Perhaps a program is hanging and causing your comptuer not to shut down correctly.

Press CTRL + ALT + DEL to see the system tasks (Processes running) and check to see if any are using a lot of processor resources. If so, end task on the item (if possible) and then the comptuer will either shut down immediatly or if not, go ahead and try to shut down once again through the start menu.

It is safe to reboot your computer by holding down the power button for 4 secdonds (reseting) your comptuer should turn on again, ive had simmilar problems before with the shutting down and it was an application causing it. I hate norton mind you.

O.K. you got AVG, good! How about Ad-Aware, Spy-bot Search & Destroy, and Windows Defender? Try running AVG etc. in "Safe Mode". Sometime the green meenies hang out in places where all the bells and whistles of Win XP mask them. Safe mode strips all the bells and whistles away. Actually, safe mode is a version of Win 98. If that doesn't do it, do a repair using your Win XP installation Cd. Read about how to use the repair console at Microsoft.com.

Ctrl+alt+del and use the task manager to make it shut down or restart... and if that dont work try making "crash" (not really tho) you do this by while in the task manager go to "Processes" and end "explorer.exe"... it'll say something like "file not found" and it'll turn off... i wouldnt recomnd doing this too many times tho
