You cant hide your IP really, if you use the internet, it is freely available to obtain. Anyone with the knowledge of obtaining an ip address can do so if they please, however it is not an easy task to hack someone, really. the majority of people do not know how to get into someones computer (including myself) and i am pretty computer literate.

but to protect yourself, have a firewall installed on your comptuer and a good antivirus solution to protect you from trojans or any other viruses that allow malacious attacks on your computer.

Use Network Address Translation.

Create a home network using private (RFC1918) IP addresses
can be wireless or not
can have many machines or not

Connect a router to the home network and also to the Internet
Configure the router for network address translation
(NAT also referred to as IP Masquerade, Hide NAT, PAT or Port overload)

Those on the Internet will generally receive the Internet IP Address of the router, not that of your PC directly. Even if the PC does pass its own IP Address, it will not be usable from the Internet because you used Private Addressing for the home network and these addresses are not routable across the Internet.
