Define work, please. ; )
I am a full-time homemaker, you'd be amazed at how many people think I am "unemployed".

I've seen reversals work fine.
My brother and his wife did great by it. And have had to a couple of times; their marriage is strong by faith and love, so that helps.
My niece makes more money than hubby. They are comfortable with it and if need be, Reed can stay home and take home of the baby. But for now, both are steadily employed and under 30, so they have not had to reach that decision yet, but they'd do fine, I'm sure.
Depends on attitude and upbringing and strength of marriage. Who cares who looks up or down on these changes in the marriage structure? White men over 40 are usually laid off with silly excuses, anyway, so it's inevitable that they will lose their employment before they're 50 yrs old, so they might as well as plan for it.
Being of a WASP background, nearly every male of my parents and siblings generations, friends and other family members have thus far ALL but 3 males have met with this 40+ bye bye employment scenario. 3 out of 25 that I know of.
So, we might as well as be flexible about who works, who stays at home, who earns more, who who who cares, just so long as the bills get paid and you don't wind up out in the street!

Work Ethic es different than social roles.
Socially is incorrect for a man not to work, at best is tolerated if an excellent house-bond, yet, the effort of women at home is increasingly recognized and their role at the work force well accepted (even if under priced). Of course, more educated communityes have more flexible roles.
On the work Ethic hand, it is presumably the same for both, they are accountable to the same degree, the only difference seems to be that women are more tolerated to loose control of their emotions and disrespect their coworkers, of course, no decent woman would rely on this tolerance and most keep well under control, yet some seem to unethically use it as an advantage.

I hear what you're saying, but I think that society is changing all the time, and whereas Mr. Mom's used to be unheard of, now they're on the increase, along with women who choose to put their career first. I figure, hey, whatever works for the family is the right way!

In many homes, the women wear the pants anyway. Men are merely tolerated. So the men go to work where they make the women make the coffee and pay the women less. It all works out in the end. ;-)
