No, you don't need one, but it's recommended. What happens if you accidentally answer the phone and it's a fax, or if your fax answers the phone before you get to it and it's a voice call?

No, absolutely not! Look at the back of your fax, there are two or more ports for phone jacks. Plug your phone line into line then your phone into phone. most fax machines come with an instruction book that makes it more clear. If you got yours second hand, it should still have little pictures or words close to the ports denoting what goes where. Even if you have an older model, you can split your phone line with $1.00 device and plug phone to one side and fax to other, then set fax ring time to long, so that if you are home you can answer the phone before the fax picks up. If you answer before the fax and you hear comp tones, just hang up and the fax will get it.

No. You can buy a splitter. Plug it into the wall socket, your phone into one plug and fax into another. The splitter can rout the signal to the correct device. You just can't use phone and fax at the same time.

Nope you dont.
But its kind of annoying everytime a fax comes in you have to run over and switch it so that the fax answers it.

No. But if you're on the phone, faxes won't come through. (visa versa if a fax is coming through or being sent you can't use the phone)
