So a girl comes to my school to talk about her magazine 'Black Girl'. The entire school has to attend. She speaks of the success of her magazine and how she is getting star interviews with multiple famous black stars.

Well, being white, I don't feel very included. So I ask her if she'd mind if I made a 'White Girl' magazine. Her answer was 'No, I just don't think that black culture is represented in media today'.

This girl was obviously not a dumb ****. This was a very good answer. But was it true? Would her magazine have the success that it did if nobody gave a **** about black culture. And how did she get interviews from 'black stars' if black culture was not represented in the media today? Personally I believe that her magazine inspired racism and segregation. Something that my school was already suffering from enough of.

Any feedback, wether agreeing or disagreeing, would be welcome. I am very intolerant of racism on both sides and want to be aware of my own prejudices.

I have long wondered why if whites celebrate their culture it is considered racist, but everyone else of every other possible color and ethnicity can celebrate anything they wish. I'm not interested in excluding anyone. I'm just not sure why I should somehow be embarassed or feel guilty if my "whiteness" shows.

This is America which is a predominately white country and it still doesn't recognizes a lot of minority cultures. I think Teen People and Seventeen Magazine are only geared towards white girls because they have mostly white celebrities on the cover and they never talk about Black beauty and hair in their magazine. As for Black celebrities and other non-white celebs, many of them seem so "whitewashed" and they have light complexions. Why when Black people are trying to express their culture we get criticized for it? We are still trying to develop our own culture and our own sense of pride because many of us are not connected with Africa. I'm glad they are making a "Black Girl Mag" because young Black females need more positive role models who look like them and dealt with the same issues as them instead of presenting a light-skinned entertainer like Halle Berry or Mariah Carey as a "black girl"

Yes, we may not be included in minority culture, but we do not lack cultural outlets at all.

I'll bet that the minorities that do build their own media outlet do so because they do not feel included in ours, even though ours are theoretically open to them.

When you go looking for magazines, do you really feel at a lack for choices because of your ethicity? Some non-white people do.

Welcome. Though never admiteted, reverse discrimination is alive and well. Can I offer a scholarship to only "White, Male, Straight, Christians"? Of course not! Not that I would want to, but it proves a point. It's not ok to be any of the above and proud of it.

Why don't we have Miss White America? or Paleface magazine? Just imagine what would happen. Sickening. ;-)

I disagree. Why can't we appreciate our own culture. If you don't like it then shutup about it.
