I am a IB student. This is from IB Bio Hl. WE did a lab in which under a microscope we placed a leaf from a elodea plant. We then added glucose and had to figure out what happened. Then we used distilled water to wash the glucose and had to note what happened when we added distilled water. We repeated the experiment using sodium. I'm not very good and Biology and that question is part of my lab. Any help would be appreciated.

These are the key points you will need to know:

hypertonic - osmosis causes water to flow out of the cell.

hypotonic - osmosis causes water to flow into the cell.

Now your explanation could be supported by your observations or just the fact that salt is a hypertonic solution and causes water to flow out of the cell and glucose is a hypotonic solution, which will cause the water to flow into the cell.

as water molecules are starting to be right into a cellular by using a selectively permeable membrane, we can say that "osmosis" is happening. and osmosis is the flow of water molecules from an area of extreme concentration to an area of low concentration. as osmosis is the diffusion of water by using a semi-permeable membrane, from a answer of "low solute concentration" (extreme water means) to a answer with "extreme solute concentration" (low water means), up a solute concentration gradient, we can say that the encompassing fluid is unquestionably HYPOTONIC. wish that facilitates!!

Water will move to combine with salt. Same concept as keeping people with high blood pressure on low salt diets.
