The first Gmail users were Google employees, who invited their own friends...and so on...and so on.
p.s. As has been said already in this thread, you don't need an invite anymore, despite the massive amount of misinformation on this site otherwise, and haven't needed them for over a year now. If you live in certain countries, you can sign up using a mobile phone capable if receiving a text (sms) message.

You don't have to be invited anymore, and then you could have gone on through you cell phone, and they send you a text message with a code.
