I saw Hairspray in Toronto, and it is a great musical. It is being filmed in Toronto as we speak. I have been past the set a few times.

Hairspray is a Tony-winning musical, based on the 1988 movie Hairspray. The story is of a girl named Tracy Turnblad whose dream is to dance on the Corny Collins Show, a local TV dance program based on the real-life Buddy Dean Show in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. She gets a chance on the show and becomes a celebrity overnight. She then launches a campaign to racially integrate the Corny Collins Show.

There is already a movie "Hairspray" from 1988. It starred Rikki Lake, Sonny Bono, Jerry Stiller and others. It was written and directed by John Waters (super genius).

There is a new one being made to be released in 2007 starring John Travolta, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, etc. etc.

Waters' only credit in this is the fact that he wrote the original 1988 screenplay. If he doesn't have more creative influence in this picture, I am sure they will ruin the whole concept.

My advice, rent/buy the original.

I'm not sure what your question is...

Plot Summary for
Hairspray (1988)

'Pleasantly Plump' teenager Tracy Turnblad achieves her dream of becoming a regular on the Corny Collins Dance Show. Now a teen hero, she starts using her fame to speak out for the causes she believes in, most of all integration. In doing so, she earns the wrath of the show's former star, Amber Von Tussle, as well as Amber's manipulative, pro-segregation parents. The rivalry comes to a head as Amber and Tracy vie for the title of Miss Auto Show 1963.
