Torre to Manage Yankees Next Season
Steinbrenner Says 'Responsibility Is Yours, Joe'
AP Sports
NEW YORK (Oct. 10) - Joe Torre will remain as manager of the New York Yankees , finally getting the word from owner George Steinbrenner after the team's surprise elimination from the playoffs last weekend.

Torre spoke with Steinbrenner on the telephone Tuesday, shortly before he walked into the interview room at Yankee Stadium and made the announcement.

"He gave me his support," Torre said. "I'm just pleased I'm able to stay on and do this."

Torre didn't go into detail about his conversations with Steinbrenner.

But Steinbrenner, in a statement issued through spokesman Howard Rubenstein, said he told Torre: "'You're back for the year. I expect a great deal from you and the entire team. I have high expectations, and I want to see enthusiasm, a fighting spirit and a team that works together. Responsibility is yours, Joe, and all of the Yankees .'

Is this an ultimatum?

I'm not surprised. It's the starting pitchers that should be worried about their jobs, not him.

it was Joe Torre's last year on his contract which will cost the Yankees 7 million dollars. it was a smart move on the Yankees part. Torre is a proven winner and had the support of the players and fans. he is a proven winner and a great manager. i bet if he wins the pennant i bet he will be resigned. if he wins the world series he would definitely be resigned. I'm glad because the Yankees had a lot of injuries through the season. he did a great job just like A-Rods number were good as well. they need help with their pitching and maybe they should pass on Sheffield.
anyway, there will be some player changes for sure!

in the beginning, i'm a pink Sox fan. I even have seen some video games the place judgements he's made i presumed had a damaging result on the recreation, and that befell approximately 4 circumstances. the guy's controlled what a million, one hundred-something wins and four WS and 13 positioned up Seasons with the Yankees. They (Steinbrenner & Sons or Cashman) are actual retarded to permit him pass. Who the heck do they think of they are going to replace him with? Mattingly? Mattingly replaced right into a 1B, All-famous guy or woman. solid Managers (of the universal a Yankee supervisor could desire to be) are the two Catchers or Pitchers, no longer First Basemen. I recommend his first 365 days there he controlled a observe sequence win... yet another component as quickly as we had that knuclkehead Dan Duquette he spent lots time blaming human beings ... after a jointly as there replaced into no person left responsible. an analogous component will ensue to Cashman (who feels like a typical enormous apple city sleaze bag in any case). back, as a pink Sox fan, it quite is super information. i'm hoping Torre is going to Texas, he can paintings some magic with them. he's a stylish guy and he will have a competent destiny. Yank followers get waiting for us to take many extra branch Pennants now which you have have been given basically permit the main experienced and argueably the main suitable supervisor in baseball walk out the door.

No I am not surprised. For starters, the Yankees organization never once said that Joe would be fired, a NY paper announced this. At Yankees.com and at Yesnetwork.com (the regional sports channel for the NY Yankees) this rumor was never announced.

An ultimatum? Sure, if you consider Joe only has one year left on his contract. Personally, I feel that Joe could walk away anytime he likes, on his terms. Like Frank Sinatra once sang... "I did it MY WAY!"

I'm very surprised, especially with how much Joe and the Old Man went at it in the off-season and the early part of the season; I thought he was definitely a goner.

i am surprised i thought he should have been fired...he has not been a very good manager when it mattered the last 6 years...this team needs a new voice but George wants to give it one more shot and let him ride out the rest of his contract...if he doesn't succeed next season don't expect him back in pinstripes in 2008

No.

Joe Torre is a great baseball man
and is well respected by all his peers.

He is the only person wearing a yankee uniform
that I actually like.

I have to say, I am a little surprised, but very happy. Normally when reports like that come out, they seem to be true, I am very glad Joe is back.

No, the yankees owe him 7 million whether he worked for them or It will be easier for them to sign free agents with him still working there.
