As a big 'Smile' (and 'Pet Sounds') fan- I am English and 'only' 28 by the way- I have said 'Smile' when this question has been asked before.

Apart from The White Album, Sergeant Pepper has the most greatly varying quality of songs out of all The Beatles post 1964 albums. Magical Mystery Tour is far more symbolic of psychedelia, with more big hits on it.

The opening title song is great, the second song ('Lucy in the sky with diamonds') was covered better by Joe Cocker, Getting Better is a good song but perhaps quite ordinary by Beatles standards to be honest,. The next great song is Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite! Within You Without you is not as good as some of George Harrison's other songs. Things are redeemed by the final song, A Day In The Life, which is a ground-breaking classic.

As a concept album, 'Smile' beats Sergeant Pepper as 'Smile' tells a discernible story. The third section of 'Smile' is particularly superb to me- haunting, upbeat, scary and soothing.

In fact, as Paul McCartney visited Brian Wilson during the early recordings of Smile in the mid 60s, The Beatles may have picked up on the Victoriana theme of 'Smile' and used it for parts of 'Sergeant Pepper' (eg ...Mr Kite).

I still stick with 'Smile' though Sergeant Pepper has slightly better artwork.

And to rrahh- it's not our fault that relatively few people would understand the 'Smile...pepper' question.

Tough question, as we had to wait, what, 35 years for SMILE to come out complete? And during that 35 years we had PEPPER all the time, never far from our consciousness . . . I'm afraid I still give the edge to PEPPER.
