A number of people I know have been to their doctors recently for basic medicine only to be told they (the Doctors) have been told by the government to cut down on giving out prescription drugs.
Surely this can only lead to more illegal drugs being used thus causing more problems for the NHS in the long run.
Blair and his cronies keep telling us that the NHS is getting better yet there are more people with serious health problems than ever.
Could this be down to local doctors not treating people properly.

It seems to me that there are a combination of 2 parties at fault. Firstly the government for imposing that action, and the doctors for being fools and jumping at every whim.
Where I live, in Canada, we have bed shortages in hospitals. However there is one particular hospital whose doctors have told administration officials to pay the fine because it is a necessity. So you see it all depends of the situation, It is true, however, that the government has imposed matters. However it is also true that you have some doctors who are chicken-poop, and are not in the least bit interested in the patients. It really all depends on who the doctor is, because some of them are actually really caring and concerning people, with strong morals.

No, most definitely not! All Health Professionals are currrently under enormous pressure to save money because the Government has screwed up NHS finances with this failed national computer system. Dr's do not withold treatment because they want to! Dr' and others are under pressure form the axe weilding pen pushers who are told what to do by the very stupid Patricia Hewitt and Tony Liar.
Dr's and other Health Professionals have as much choice in how the Health Service is being killed by Labour as we do, if you want to help Dr's, Nurses etc fight this butchery don't blame them, join them!!

I've not heard of this and basically, I don't believe this. your tale.

How many people do you know who are going to see a Doc for basic 'medicine'? And, more essentially, what type of 'prescriptive drugs' are we talking about?

True, there are many people with serious health problems, many relating to drugs, alcohol and their diet, most of which could be avoided.

Having read through most of the answers to date, it's really clear how little attention that some people pay to 'what EXACTLY is written.'

Some people read what they think they see.

In most cases, doctors' hands are tied by insurance companies (or in what is apparently your case, governmental universal health coverage). The problem is a very large one, and no single institution deserves all the blame, it actually winds up being a cyclical cause - health care providers and drug manufacturers charge as much as they can, insurance providers charge clients more and charge less, people have to pay more and get worse coverage so they go to the doctors more, doctors and pharmaceutical companies make more money and continue to raise prices...

No matter what, you are responsible for your own health. If you don't get the medicine you need, it's up to you to complain complain complain. If you need to buy it yourself until you're successful, you may have to do that. If enough people complain, something will happen.

Doctors are not causing problems. You've answered your own questions when you said the government is telling them to cut down. If the doctors are doing as order, then they are not the problem.

I've been practicing medicine for over 15 years, I've never been told by the government to stop or cut down on prescribing drugs.

I have no idea what they are telling British docs, but that seems pretty asinine to me.

The government is not telling doctors to cut down on prescriptions. Prescriptions are manufactured and sold by private companies, the government does not care how many are sold.
