My girlfriend does not have a good relationship with her mom or dad. I'm just wondering how awkward that would be if we got married and she doesn't have her dad to walk her down the aisle. Anyone had such an experience?

It's your wedding. Do what YOU want. I had both my parents walk me down the aisle, but we have very solid relationships. My husbands parents also walked with him. I've seen some couples walk down the aisle together and forgo the whole "waiting at the altar". This takes away the bride as merchandise tradition (ie: the father "giving" the bride to the groom).

If she doesn't have a good relationship with her parents and doesn't want them to take part, that is her decision. Don't make yourselves uncomfortable because you feel you have to follow "tradition".

I had a friend that this happened to once...

Her mom and dad refused to be present at the wedding, therefore leaving her alone to walk down the aisle. People who knew her saw no problem with her escorting herself down the aisle, and so what if anyone else who didn't know the story thought it was weird. Another option is if she has a brother, a sister, a cousin, an aunt or uncle, etc. that she has a good relationship with to walk her down the aisle. Even if she has a male or female friend, that's a possibility as well. There's a way around everything anymore. :)

Hope this helped a little...

Does she have anyone that she is very close to that would do it for her, it should be a memorable moment, not an awkward one. If she does not have a good relationship with either one, she should chose someone that has always been there for her, her grandpa, an uncle. or even one of your relatives. If it is ok with her. Have been to several wedding where the father nor mother walked down the aisle.. UMM, are the parents invited to the wedding??

I don't know about this situation, but my own parents were DEAD and Buried before I ever got engaged or married (and it was short -- due to a violent/abusive ex whose mental health issues I did not know about until after the marriage).

As a result, I walked myself down the aisle -- I worked anyway, so that was fine with me. She can be escorted down the aisle by ANY friend (male or female) if that is what she wishes.

What you need to determine is WHY the split from her Parents -- was it mutual or what? Sometimes in their mid to late teens, teenagers get really difficult to deal with, violent/angry, disrespectful, whatever. If this is the case, then she really needs some time to grow up and get counseling BEFORE you make any relationship permanent -- because the relationship with her parents is reflective of the problems that could possibly plague your marriage!

The parents that raised me are dead and my birth father couldn't be there for my second wedding, so I had my future father in law walk me down the aisle. I always loved and respected him so it was an honor for both of us to have him do this.

Like others have said, have someone that has always been there for her walk her down the aisle. It doesn't have to be a relative; it can be a good friend, a friends husband, whatever.

There is nothing wrong with it, if they don't show up. It would be appropriate that she invite them, tho! Even though they are not on good relationship, that doest mean you shouldn't invite them Let them decide whether to show up or not. It would not be awkward if they don't show up only if they don't advertise the situation, but at least give them the opportunity to show up and the honor of given her away. If they decline, then find a father figure and have him walk her down the isle. Good Luck

Happens a lot. If she doesn't want them, you can still plan a nice wedding. She can either walk down the aisle by herself or have another relative or friend go with her. Just don't let anything ruin the wedding and I hope it turns out great.

Actually, it is quite common now a days. My sister just got married in June. Our mom and dad didn't come.
So, my brother, he stepped up to the plate and walked her. It could not have been any better. And honestly, nothing was missing from her wedding. It was perfect, even without them.

"giving the bride away" is a very old and nice tradition based from a time when the groom was literally taking the burden of her existance off the father's hands.

Today, since most women make their own money and get the same educations men do, this is a needless, but yes, it is a nice, custom.

The bride can walk the isle herself, and give herself away to her groom on her own.
