PMU horse is a horse that has been rescued from a farm that produces Premarin. Premarin is a menopause hormone drug made from Pregnant Mare Urine. The Mares were bred only to produce urine. Often the foals were slaughtered after the birth.

What no ones told you:

PMU horses are usually of draft breeding. They produce the most urine due to their large size. The most often bred drafts for PMU production are belgiums. These horses are usually crossed with Quarter horses and paints among various other breeds.

I would not recommend a PMU foal or mare as a first horse if you have not had at least 5 years experience at a work barn with horses. For a beginner horse owner a 14 year old horse is your best bet. You'll be happy with your finished horse and not overwhelmed with training problems and difficulties.

Good luck!

PMU horses are no different than any other horses. These horses are bred on a line to get the Pregnant Mare Urine used in hormone therapies. The PMU horses are the products of these pregnant mares. They are awesome horses, and you can find some amazingly bred animals. They can be founda anywhere, and can make some of the most amazing animals.... If you bought one of these horses, you would probably give it an amazing home.

ever heard of Premarin? its a drug for menopause....
Its made from the urine from pregnant mares, which supposedly has estrogen it it.
PMU stands for Pregnant Mare Urine, and it refers to any horse that has been involved in the industry in any way.

The problem with needing pregnant mares is that every year there are thousands of unwanted foals born. Most end up at a slaughter house. Not that its good for the mares to be standing in tie stalls 24/7 while they are pregnant.

A PMU horse would only be a good first horse if you weren't the first owner off the factory. A foal is never a good first horse, and a mare that has only been taught to stand in a tie stall isn't a good first horse either. But a 10 year old horse that was born on a PMU farm and was bought by someone else who trained him would be just as likely to be a good first horse as any other horse.

A Pmu is a horse that is used for the hormonal replacement for women. Usually they require training and do not make good first horses.

Pregnant Mare Urine

They breed the mares to get the urine when they are pregant which they then make into hormone replacement drugs.

I haven't heard of them , and only researched it a second ago, it would depend if you wanted a horse that was bred for this, it would probably be better to buy a riding horse, only because it seems more logical, but if you want to save one, go for it, there should be more humane people saving animals!!

Pregnant Mare's Urine. The mares are kept in a barn in a cramed up stall with cups tied to their back end to catch the urine of the pregnant mare.
The mares are usually bred back right after each foal is born.
you have to be carefull with the babies and take youre time and be patient! They are very sweet foals!
