I am practically computer illiterate and those answers are like talking another language to me. Can anyone tell me in "dummy" English how to tell if someone is using my router AND how to stop it. I power down my computer each night but I didn't turn off the wireless. Should I just unplug the cable to the wireless? Then do I plug it back in prior to booting up again in the a.m.? Or can I just leave my computer on if the wireless is unplugged? Any info is appreciated !!!!

There is not really an easy way of seeing who is using your router as their internet connection. The only thing I can suggest is to use the WEP KEY feature on your router. If you have linksys, then just type 192.168.1.1 (hit enter), use the password admin (hit enter), and then there should be a WEP KEY setup for your router. You need to enter a hard password and then the router will encrypt it. You need to hook up your other computers that are using the wireless connection using that encrypted password. That way, other people cannot used your secured wireless network.

If you need step by step guidance, then just contact me through my profile and I can help you through it.

mac address filtering. Every network card and wireless network card has a hard coded number called a mac address.

Inside your router settings (depending on which router you have) to access it look at your routers manual.. usually it is http://192.168.1.1 or http://192.168.0.1 (or a variation of those numbers) to gain access to the configuration area.

Once you are in, there should be a mac address filter setting, you can go in and add 1 by 1 each mac address from each one of your hosts on your network.

To get your mac address, click the START button, go to RUN.. type in cmd and press enter. You get a black window, type this command:

ipconfig /all

You will then see your MAC address on the installed network card, take that number and place it into the routers configuration. That means only the mac addresses that are on the router are allowed to use the routers resources.

**NOTE** MAC addresses do not change so you only have to add this in once, unless of course you get another network card.

Hope this helps.

no all you need to do is at night shut down the pc and then unplug the power to the pc / monitor & router you do not need to remove any cable at all
just make sure the power plugs are out of the power outlet then your pc and montior & router will be safe from any damage from a power outage / power cut
