Wayt back in the day, it was plain and easy to spot. They were made from duck material, which is a tightly woven heavy weight cotton.

They were intended to make it easy to spot an escaped prisoner since no one with fashion sense and a free will would choose an outfit like that. They came from the Middle Ages where they were considered a way to identify and degrade any outcasts in society
