John F. Kennedy - Most charismatic President in my memory. Stood up to the Russians at a very critical time (the Cuban missile crisis.) Stood up to George Wallace and the state of Alabama and their white supremacist laws.

Lyndon Johnson - Established MediCare. Turned America's attention to the concerns of the poor. Showed his egomania, though, in escalating the VietNam war at great cost in lives and fortune simply because he did not want to be the first President to lose a war.

Richard Nixon - Morally bankrupt egomaniac. Great foreign diplomat, though. Resolved the VietNam war, even though we lost. That was very brave and good on his part. Oddly, this Republican was responsible for the first "wage-price freeze" which was obviously based on socialist theory.

Gerald Ford - Wasn't around long enough to tell much. Made a bad call when he gave Nixon a blanket pardon, IMHO.

Jimmy Carter - One of the finest men who served as U.S. President. A man with a true Christian heart, in my estimation. Not a very effective leader, though. Couldn't get re-elected, and was viewed as weak by the world at large. However, he did facilitate a lasting peace between Israel and Egypt and caused our nation to focus on human rights around the world.

Ronald Reagan - Charismatic, and a great communicator, at least in the early years. The economy boomed, gas prices fell, and most importantly the Berlin wall fell, Russia fell apart, and lost much power and face in the world. Others share in causing this historic event, like the Pope, but Reagan played an important role. If you can't recall civil defense drills, a predominating fear of nuclear annihilation, etc, then you will remember Reagan fondly, at least in this regard.

George Bush - Freed Kuwait from Iraqi invasion and domination. Took a much larger military, and more equipment to acheive a smaller goal than his son is doing now. We got in and got out quicky and effectively. He did bring unnecessary carnage on the Iraqi people by promising to help them to topple Saddam Hussein. Many Iraqi's lost their lives (especially Kurds) because of this promise that we did not deliver on. I suspect this is at least part of the reason that George Jr. is so interested in Iraq. I'm sure his father feels a bit guilty about that.

Bill Clinton - Charismatic. Helped to pass the American Family Leave Act and the don't ask don't tell military policy regarding homosexuality. After that, I can't think of any lasting legacy that Clinton has left for us. Well he did brag about shrinking government, however, government in size and cost in every area except the military which he decimated. That's partly why we have so few troops now. Many were forced into early retirement during the Clinton years as a result of his policies.

George W. Bush - Can't tell much about him yet. He is the only post 9/11/01 President we have had. It's hard to know how another might have handled such a huge attack on our homeland. He had near unanimous backing by Congress which gave him war powers specifically for Iraq. Iraq is a mess right now and history will give us more information. Right now, the American public is in the dark as a matter of usual course in times like these.

There's a brief overview of the Presidents that I remember. I'm sorry I don't share your views on Bill Clinton. The greatest man who served as U.S. President, IMHO, was Jimmy Carter. The greatest President with the most significant and positive legacy for our nation was Ronald Reagan. I have no desire to argue, it is simply my opinion. I am curious to see what others will say and what reasons they will give.

Thanks for the interesting question.

Uh, gee, I kinda hate to point this out, but the first WTC bombing was during Willy's watch. And we are still sending troops to Bosnia for Bill's war. Oh, and there was that pesky de-regulation thing back in the mid-90's that allowed the Enron incident to occur.

My favorite was Eisenhower.
