There's a scene where the kidnapped woman is down in a pit, and she sees something on the wall of the pit and screams. It looks like a fingernail. How did a fingernail (presumably from the last victim) get stuck to the wall? Or if it's not a fingernail, what the heck is it and why does it scare her?

When she sees the bloody fingernail from somebody trying to escape, she realizes that she is not the first victim and will probably not escape.

She sees bloody fingernails from the previous victims that were kept in his hole...they got there because the women got so desperate they tried to climb out and broke their fingernails off on the walls of the pit.

When he was pulling the bucket up, there was a flashlight attached to it; it lit up the pit so she could see clearly! She saw bloody claw marks and broken fingernails embedded in the wall of the pit!! It scares her because it is a prelude of things to come for her!! And, she probably assumes the person isn't alive anymore!! You can only speculate what is going through her mind!!

This was one of the very few movies where the movie actually exceeded the book in suspense and drama.

Your other folks have given a good explaination of this scene.

When I first read the book and later when I saw the movie I just could not imagine any one being imprisoned like that. Now we know that it is not unusual at all for women to be imprisoned. It makes me angry just thinking about it.
