I went to a check cashing place to pay my water bill. Someone handed me an item that was on the floor and I took it. Later a stranger woman came to my house harassing my child that she wants her item back or she'll come back with police.

I found out that this woman got my home address from a clerk at the check cashing place. I DID NOT GIVE MY PERMISSION. I spoke to local police officer who came to the place AFTER the woman left my house. He also stated he never gave her my address and told the clerks that what they did was ill advised for safety and privacy purposes. I have filed complaints with the Better Business Bureau and the FTC. I'm seeking legal advice as well. This woman could have had A gun!

You have done all that you can do. Use this incident as a reminder that when you find something in a public place it should be left at that public place. When someone looses something they will return to the public place and expect to find their item there. If you walk away with something, it is easy for any witness to point you out as the person who has the item. Your license number could be taken. As you saw right or wrong your address could be divulged. There is no law of finders keepers. If the item had been stolen by the first party you could be guilty of receiving stolen goods. Keep your hands in your pockets and do not pick up "lost" items.

With the many scams that occur today. I would be leary !! I would be quite thankful for such a kind gesture but, I would want to be sure that is was/ genuine . If things were " legit ", I would be "dancing in the streets " !! I could use such a generous, kind and, sincere action but, I'm sure that I'm not alone in feeling this way.

What was the item? Was it something expensive like a phone or valuable like jewelry?

They were very wrong in giving out your address!!!

Just give the item back. Its not yours!! And if it was something that you lost you would want it back. I mean come one, if she would come back and harm your child how would you feel then. Pretty Stupid huh
Besides look at what you are teaching your child.

It all boils down to were you injured? Yes, they were wrong, but you have not "suffered" so you do not have a lawsuit.
