can u tell me the uses of the element mercury and what QUALITIES of mercury(element) make it USEFUL for this purpose?

It is the only metal in our periodic table that is fluid in ambiant tempeature and is stable.

Mercury is used in some electrical switches to "wet" the contact to prevent sparks from pitting the contact. Also, old style thermostat uses mercury to roll side to side on gravety to form a switch.

Mercury is still used in instruments as indicators because the surface tention makes it to bulge UP, not down like water making it much easier to read. Also, it has very low expansion/contraction due to temperature changes.

In dentistry: Most metal are soulable in mercury so for strong mteal fillings this is used in small quantities to disolve metals.

Neon signs: Mercury in an excited state is ver efficient; with other gases.
