A tragic hero is one to whom something bad happens in the end.
He is heroic in the sense that he is strong, righteous and does the right thing. The readers are all on his side and it seems that his goodness will win out over the evil forces he fights.
And while he finally accomplishes the deeds he set out to, "he" does not personally benefit because something bad happens to him in the end. An example would be Spartacus. Though he led the slave rebellion and even won in his cause for many slaves, he was crucified and separated from all he loved.
