Because they don't search for the meaning of the song beyond the obvious "Born in the U.S.A." chorus. That Reagan referred to this song & used it as background music is beyond comical. Same thing for "This Land Is Your Land" as someone else pointed out. This is really a metaphor for the whole thought process. Nothing personal against the flag wavers - but the logic of thinking is flawed. Never look too deeply into anything. Boil it down to "yes/no", "true/false", "black/white". Don't really analyze or explore anything too deeply....just go for the obvious jingoism - "we know most people don't really think"-mentality. It's shameful how little respect the "flag waving" politicians have for their own constituency. If ANYONE in the Reagan administration took 5 minutes to actually read Springsteen's lyrics - they would realize how inappropriate a song it was to use. That it got by EVERYONE and ended up actually being used says quite a lot...in & of itself - it's not a big deal - only a song, right?....but it symbolizes something much greater about the whole thought process.

The same reason they think This Land is your Land is a patriotic song. Poor reasoning skills and lack of knowledge.

Who are you talking about?

Bruce Springsteen is far from a favorite of me and my conservative friends. Hes in a special group of flag burners like Barbara Striesand, Sean Penn, Alec Baldwin and Micheal Moore.

I dont think Ive EVER heard anyone use that as a patriotic song.

"Proud To Be An American" is a patriotic song or the liberal favorite.... "Proud to be a baby killing flag burner".

I don't know. I've wondered that too. Of course, I wonder why anyone would listen to Springstein, but that's a personal opinion.

It's a QUICK and easy way to fool their base into believing they have america's best interest at heart. OBVIOUSLY their ACTIONS show a whole other motivation.
