let your bodies develop into adults before you do anything

I disagree with the person who said "wait 'til you're adults before you do anything". Teens can lift weights, but they should not expect the "bulging biceps" resuts that older weightlifters get. Their bodies are still developing and it's hard to know what "type" of body you have until you are in your late teens/early 20's. For instance, some people will stay "skinny" no matter how much they life. They'll be strong but won't look it.

Some will look like Arnold Shwarzenegger and around age 35 when they're still teens, due to their body type and hormones. This is true of girls as well (it's a common myth that NO girls can "bulk up" by lifting weights!).

Still others, will remain somewhat "pudgy" and will never develop a "muscular" physique, no matter how hard they train, unless they starve themselves, which is unhealthy.

I advise what's called "cross-training": a combination of aerobic activity (cycling, swimming, running, XC skiing), endurance training (many of the above but for longer distances and times) and strength training. (lifting free weights-generally NOT a good idea w/o supervision...in fact all exercise programs should be supervised to start out). Endurance training can also be done w/weights, but with a lower weight and more reps.

In short, just get your friend active in a variety of things and see what he likes. Maybe lifting is YOUR thing, but not his! My kid enjoys bike-riding, swimming, walking and hiking but wouldn't go the gym if you paid him!

He is VERY thin and likes to have that "Punk look" (he's in a band)...and I've gotta say, the girls REALLY like it! THey don't want a "muscleman". (lots of guys make this mistake!).

The important thing is to let your friend focus on what HE likes, not what you think he should like!
