"a variable" is just another way of saying "a number".
since product means multiplication, the first one would be (-3) * X
X=variable=a number
The second one is right; X/12

1) -3x x stands for the number (x is a variable), and putting it right next to -3 means multiply
2) x/12 x is the variable, and make a fraction of it. x, y, or z are commonly chosen for variables. variable means its value can change. It could be 1, 2 ,3 or 1,000. It could be any number, but usually not 0. 0 does funny things. It can be a negative number, or a fraction. It's value varies, so it is called a variable.
You do understand, you just need some confidence.

Elektra is right.
you are asked for variables...therefore it is expected that there are unknowns and since you statements are not mathematical equations...you only need to represent them
let us assume that X be any number:
the product of -3 and a number (X)--> product so you are to multiply therefor --> -3X
a number (X) divided by 12 ---> x/12 YOU ARE CORRECT IN THIS ONE.

for #1, finding a product of numbers means multiplying them together.. so it would be -3 multiplied by a number (x), or -3x.
for #2, you are correct.
