I know his stock once went so high, he was surely known as the richest Indian. But second richest in the world.... second only to Bill Gates??? Did that ever happen?

During the height of the tech boom in the year 2000, Wipro chairman, Azim Premji with an asset close to US $30+ billion was indeed ranked as the SECOND richest in the world right after Bill Gates of the US.

Therefore, the answer is YES. He once held the mantle of the SECOND richest in the world.

The richest person of "Indian origin" right now is Mittal of Mittal-Arcelor Steel.

In 2000, he was voted among the 20 most powerful men in the world by Asiaweek. He was also among the 50 richest people in the world from 2001 to 2003 according to Forbes. In April 2004, he was rated among the 100 most influential people in the world by Time magazine. His assets include 84% holding in Wipro Technologies (the remaining belonging to the cofounder of Wipro). In January 2006, he was the 10th richest man in the world.

In 2005, Premji was awarded the Padma Bhushan.

No way!!! Maybe richest in India, though I'm not sure he is anymore. But definitely not second richest in the world. That title belongs to Warren Buffet I think.
