I often get told that as a Black person I should empathize more with Gay people becasue we were/sometimes are discriminated against as a people. I'm a little skiddish on the relation of the ideas but here goes, Wouldn't it be pointless for me to celebrate at 26 years old

Not ever being in a Jail
I have no kids running around without a father
My Father never been to jail
I have a Great Job, My own Place, My College Degree
These are issues Black men face and don't always overcome, if I try to celebrate it with Chips and Pie at work that would be Retarded. Yet all of that is a part of who I am vs. the statistics.

Yet if someone Comes out at work, it's different than what I've described. Why and How?

Or you can simply say I am Comparing Apples and Oranges the two should never be compared. Thats your Double Jeporday ? of the day.

I see your point. I think it's more like comparing oranges and grapfruit. I think that what you have accomplished is much more than somebody coming out. I guess we just feel so relieved to finally get that out of us, that we feel like celebrating while what you have done isn't a secret that you have been holding in you for years.

I have never felt the need to have a party to come out. However, I think the rationale is that because ones sexuality is not always readily apparent, it is good to get it out in the open for a few reasons. One, it helps promote understanding amongst people- i.e. the more gay people you know, the less stereotypes you will hold. Two, it sometimes helps people feel comfortable knowing that everyone is in the know-and less likely to make comments that are inappropriate around them- of course, this sometimes backfires.

In a lot of ways, it is dissimilar from other minority groups, because many don't have to make an announcment of their race or gender- it is pretty clear from just knowing the person.

I do think that all minority groups could learn from one another. In recent years some of the biggest supporters of GLBT causes have been black clergy.

Overall, it isn't about have a party to really draw attention for attention's sake. It is about stating, here I am and I am really no different than any of you, so let's practice some mutual respect.

I am not sure I got your point....but I guess you mean that there is no reason for us to celebrate or have parties for just being a part of the society....I guess it is a bit different than being black though...one is just skin colour and it is easy to overcome the stigma. The other is a way of life, thats why we get so hard time. If you are black but successful, without all the cons you mentioned, even the worse racist could accept you.
If you are gay though, some people wouldnt care even if you were the smartest person on earth helping blind children in Africa without being paid....for them we are always fa.gs...and you can see for yourself...people still say fa.g freely while they cant say ****.er...and gays have been around thousands of years earlier than slavery and racism...and we still get hard time...And I dont think it will ever change, because black people were really mistreated and they fought back one day because this tough life hardened them, they kicked as.ses...we dont kick as.ses we just argue...but sometimes people need a hammer on their heads to understand some things.

I've never worked anyplace where they celebrate coming out with chips and pie! And I wouldn't want a celebration. I just want to be honest and still be respected, and I suspect most every other LGBT person wants the same thing.

For the same reason that there is a Black History Month or a national holiday to remember one of our nations most beloved civil rights workers, MLK.It is to have pride in that which has set you apart and made you a target of hate and intolerance in a society that discriminates on any level.

"I still hear people say that I should not be talking about the rights of lesbian and gay people and I should stick to the issue of racial justice... But I hasten to remind them that Martin Luther King, Jr., said, 'Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere' ... I appeal to everyone who believes in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s dream to make room at the table of brotherhood and sisterhood for lesbian and gay people."-Coretta Scott King

Honestly, I think he can do whatever he wants, as long as hes not sticking arsenic in the red velvet cake. You certainly could celebrate all of those things if you wanted to, but you don;t and i see why. Maybe his definition of silly is just different than yours. I hope he has a great time, and eats lots of yummy stuff at his party!

You should celebrate and you probably did the day that you recieved your college degree. It is human nature to celebrate milestones in our lives. When you get married you will celebrate again, or when you get promoted, or whatever milestone you have in your life. Coming out is a milestone for a lot of poeple, it is a great accomplish in today's society to be comfortable to be who you are.
