I also think that when he found out that the intelligence that he took to the U.N. was based on a lie that his reputation was at stake and I think he ran, not walked to disassociate himself from the evil empire.

George W. Bush served in the Air National Guard, even though it appears that he "dogged" the last two years. He was a qualified jet fighter pilot and his commanding general said that he was "one of the best pilots."

His father was a fighter pilot in the Pacific during WWII. He was shot down by the Japs. Doesn't that qualify as combat experience?

The members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff all had combat experience. They were not pushed out nor did they resign.

Stuck on stupid? Bush was an Air Force fighter pilot, at least he didn't hide in Britain to avoid the draft...

I think Colin Powell and the administration butted heads over many issues including foreign policy. I also think that we would have been better off today had he been involved in policy making.

He left the administration because the administration had no respect for him. He wanted to think for himself and make an impact on policy.

To them, that meant that he couldn't stay "on message".

I would say he was the most adept military mind in the administration and he was ignored in most or all decisions concerning Iraq.

Had he been listened to, we would have entered Iraq with the Powell doctrine of overwhelming force instead of the Rumsfeld Doctrine of wtf.

He was not the only one who served, Rumsfeld was a fighter pilot for one.

He left because he's the only one who could spell, never mind understand, the word "integrity"
