Tampons are harmful to vaginal health because they prevent normal vaginal cleaning functions, dry out the mucosa causing vaginal splitting, give bacteria a pores area to multiply upon and in the case of commercial tampons also introduce chemicals into the vagina that can affect normal vaginal pH and could pose more generalised health risks – tampons are also unhygienic and can contribute to menstrual problems such as heavy menstrual flow and menstrual cramping.

If you do choose to use tampons over other options such as pads, free-flow methods or menstrual cups then it is best to avoid commercial tampons as these are the most harmful out of over twenty different menstrual options because of unnecessary synthetics and chemicals used, they are also more of an environmental risk.

Organic tampons, sponge tampons, soft tampons or homemade tampons are safer tampon options than commercial tampons such as Tampax.

Organic tampons are very similar to commercial tampons in that they are the same look and feel, they are also disposable like commercial tampons only they are made out of 100% organic cotton and are not bleached so they do not contain chemicals.

Sponge tampons are made from natural sponge so look and feel differently to commercial tampons, these are reusable so can be more convenient depending on your lifestyle and they are more environmentally friendly as well as cheaper.

As harmful as commercial tampons are scented tampons are more harmful again as they equate to more chemicals in the tampons being inserted into your body – remember the vagina is a major orifice of the body, it is also made up of mucosa similar to inside your nose so like skin only without the top protective layers.

Chemicals from the tampons can get into your body that could be harmful, you may also find you are allergic or sensitive to the ingredients in the fragrance – this fragrance can be any mixture of 60-100 different chemicals, the manufacturers are legally protected so they don't have to tell customers what those chemicals are.

The chemicals from the fragrance can have a similar effect on vaginal health as other chemicals within commercial tampons; they affect normal vaginal pH that works to keep vaginal flora [good and bad bacteria] in balance, so the bacteria can be thrown out of balance causing infections such as bacterial vaginosis.

The only reason for chemicals in tampons is to play on menstrual taboos; they bleach tampons to make them extra white to deal with 'dirty' menstruation and they add scents to deal with 'bad smelling' vaginas.

Menstruation is not dirty, your vagina does not smell bad if it is healthy, these things are done to keep girls and women using their products because they are made to think they need to in order to be clean, tampons are actually one of the most unhygienic menstrual options.

I like unscented because I have had a reaction to the scented ones.

I personally like unscented. The scented ones stink.

I prefer Tampax unscented. The ones that claim to open all around don't seem to fit as well and they leak. Unscented because I don't think our vagina was designed to have un-natural scents jammed up it.

Use scented panty liners with the tampon if you're concerned about odor.

Unscented (in my opinion) are best. Mostly beacuse a lot of people become allergic to the scented one. And also, Tampax Pearl is the best cause it goes in easier.

I hate the scented ones... it taints the way I think about roses. I hate the smell of blood mixed with roses and then actually smelling any kind of flower after smelling that is YUCKY. So I always get unscented, it actually seems like because there is no smell emminating from the tampon, that I naturally have No smell, but when I used scented tampons, because they are saturated to smell like flowers thats when you can smell the metallic scent of blood... YICKY YICKY... bleh...

Kotex, unscented. Easy glide kinds, with the pearled plastic tips. Get the super size if you're heavy.

I prefer Tampax Pearl, Scented. It's applicator has a no-slip grip and there is a braid at the end to catch leaks.

depends. The scented ones can actually give you a yeast infection if you're sensitive to getting infections. I'm able to use Tampax deoderant tampons nowadays, the new "Pearl" variety without getting an infection.
