Because no country, especially during daylight hours, wants to have their citizens operating on 2 different dates at the same time so the date line was moved around any country so as not to cross it internally

Suspendor: The international date line does not run through England. You are thinking of the Greenwich Meridian. The IDL is opposite of the Greenwich Meridian and is an imaginary line established for the purpose of demarcating the point on the globe at which the date changed to account for travelling which occurs synchronously with the earth's rotation. Just consult the Wikipedia link in the first answer.

The IDL runs down the middle of the Pacific Ocean (the place with the least amount of "land" anywhere on earth, and if you look at it does several zig zags to avoid going through any countries. Note that Greenwich England (the "0" point for time) is on the exact opposite side of the world from the IDL.

First of all, the Prime Meridian, not the IDL runs through England, so that guy is an idiot. Secondly, just think about what would happen if half a country was a day ahead/behind the other half? So, the answer to your question is "because it would seriously f*** things up"

Hate to instruct my clinical area, even though it somewhat is in basic terms an imaginary line to equalize the effects of the rotation of the sunlight around the earth. there exchange into easily a consortium that have been given at the same time and desperate the place this line would desire to be drawn. you adjust an hour for each 15 levels of longitudinal commute. Je t'aime, ma cheri. tres beaucoup.

As you look at this line on a map it zigzags around countries so that the people in those countries are literally all 'in the same day' imagine the complications if Newcastle was in Tuesday but Carlisle was in wednesday interesting but complicated if you were to drive from one to the other..you could maybe write a short story about someone who had to do that..starts on a Tuesday and gets to wednesday on the same day ...then goes home to tuesday having been to the future..good luck.

Okay, that is truly sad. The IDL cuts through Greenwich, ENGLAND. Last I heard, that was a country.

I remember in school learning that it goes through England, France, and 'a corner of Spain'. I guess the teachers today have forgotten that.

And they wonder why people won't vote them even MORE money to waste!

It was designed like that for the convenience of the country.
