Good for young kids, too?

I'm assuming you're in the Chicago area (or else you wouldn't be posting this here, right?), so I'll suggest Milwaukee. It's cheap, there stuff to do for kids (a big mall right downtown, a zoo not too far away though it's getting colder outside, etc.), adults (great bars that brew their own beer, nice new restaurants, theaters) and both (a new cool art museum, a cool German town district with German restaurants, meat shops, candy shops, etc..., and of course free tours of all the beer factories - adults get free beer at the end of the tour, kids get soda I think). It's only a couple of hours from Chicago and you can get there by train for about $40 per person each way. Or drive. They may even be having some sort of Oktoberfest right about now along the lakefront. I'm sure the Milwaukee tourism board has a website...

Camping outside of Washington DC. There are some great campsites that you can trailer or tent camp at. The Smithsonian buildings and National Zoo are free. It is my favorite way to go on a cheap vacation.

camping is great fun.
also make a list of fun places to visit with in 1 hr to 1 1/2 hr drive from you home. It doesn't have to be in the city you live in.
pack a picnic and just go.
my husband and i use to do this when we were first married and we had a ball and we got to see a lot of things our own state had to offer. oh and we still do it. now we just go alittle further , we are up to 3 hrs away from home. it can still be a day trip. you will be exhausted but it's great fun.
