Several years ago we completely stripped our wooden front doors. We got it down to the bare wood.

Some of the stain is wearing off now and I want to restain it. If I plan on using the same stain color, do I need to strip it again or can I sand down some, clean, and then stain and lacquer?

IF YOU WANT AN EVEN LOOK, YOU SHOULD GO BACK TO THE BARE WOOD. IT WOULD BE VERY DIFFICULT TO GET THE STAIN TO BLEND IN. ALSO, INSTEAD OF USING A LACQUER ON THE DOOR, TRY USING A SPAR VARNISH. THIS CAN BE USED BOTH INSIDE AND OUT AND WILL BE U.V. RESISTANT.

If you want it to look new you have to restrip it and seal, sand, and varnish it. If you just want to make it look a little better you can brush the stain on in the worn area, let it dry and put a lacquer or other finish coat over it. It would be best to spray the finish on if possible because the stain will tend to lift if you get it wet with the finish and brush over it more that once or twice.

In order to get an even color and finish, you will need to remove all of the varnish and enough of the stain to produce an even color before you restain. If you don't you'll probably have very unsatisfactory look.

Remember 2/3 of the work on any paint job is preparation.

Some stains won't strip out. So what you may have to do is to sand the doors again and then reapply the stain.

You want to do this to get the stain to apply evenly anyway.

You certainly do not HAVE to but if you want a presentable job when you finish.. you should completely strip it down.. sand it very well.. put on a coat of KILZ primer and then paint it.. IF YOU DO NOT PLAN on using a color paint, do not use the KILZ primer.

I think it looks best when you strip completely. Now, what's that about a door?

Unless you put polyurethane or some other protector on top of it, you merely have to put more stain on it.
Good luck
