You may have gotten a case of drain flies! Fruit fly types that will actually live in the gunk that lines your sink drains. The solution is to pour a few cups of bleach into each drain and then cover overnight to allow the bleach fumes to kill the eggs and maggots that have set up housekeeping in the drains. You will also need to take your garbage cans outside for a good scrubbing with a bleach solution (1cup bleach to gallon water) to kill the eggs that are on/in them!

I would also strongly recommend that for at least a week you remove all food type garbage to outside storage and also remove all potatoes, onions, garlic along with any houseplants and/or fresh flowers until you've got the suckers under control.

If they are really fruit flies, then with all your cleaning, you are well on your way to being rid of them. They live for only a few days. They lay eggs in, and the larva (worms) feed upon fruit or other vegetable matter. Let this be a learning experience for your husband and children. In the mean time, keep food covered.

Well the best thing to do is get rid of their food source which is scrap food, fruits, drinks, just about anything we eat. Then there are little sticky traps you can use that work pretty well. just hang them up like fly sticky traps and they get stuck to them. It takes a while to get rid of them b/c they are so small, but if you keep everything clean and garbage outside, and all food cleaned up after eating they will starve to death and end up in your vacuum or dust pan.

Get a baby food jar and put 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar in it with 2 drops of dishwashing liquid. They will be drawn to it and die.
