I used ointment for the first 5 days (Aquaphor is best). Then I switched to Fragrance Free lotion (Curell worked best for me). My healing time was about 2 weeks for it to stop peeling & everything. & it was a huge back piece (half of my entire back)

ALSO!! - Be sure to wash it with mild antibacterial soap!! DO NOT use a loofah or rag. Use your hands only untill it is healed.

Okay when I got my tattoo the amount of 'lotion' or gel that you put on the tattoo was enough. If you put on too much, or you just think you need more, I'd say go ahead back and just ask for some more. You dont need other ointments, creams, whatever...its been a while, but I think it was three times a day. But if your a busy bee, then in the morning and when u go to bed is fine. Remember the basics about taking care: 1.Gentle application of the goo 2.Dont let the sun catch that bare skin 3.Wear clothing that wont effect the goo or your new tattoo, like cotton.

I have three tats now and Each time I've only used a good lotion like Lubriderm, Eucerin, or Aveeno. My artist does not recomend the use of ointments as they can cause the colors to fade. depending on the size and colors used it can take up to 4-6 weeks to heal. Remember to treat you tats as minor scratches or scrapes. Wash with warm soap and water twice daily and apply lotion to keep the areas moist. I have also been advised not to let mine scab up. Hope this helps some.

I used the ointment for about 5 days... basically until the scabs had formed and were solid and then I switched to the lotion... used that for 7 days.
