Okay, after almost 20 yrs of being a licensed insurance person, I quit my job. Lots of reasons but the biggest is that I HATE INSURANCE. Now I have no health insurance for my family and could get another job in insurance quick if I want the health coverage BUT... I want to change careers. I dont know whether to pursue becoming a dog trainer(I adore dogs!) or pursue something I am sort of good at, which is creative writing...I cant decide what to do and the longer I sit doing nothing the more I get depressed. Any advice?

Loving what you do = job security.

Highly doubtful you'll want to quit a job you love. :)

OH! I am thinking you are like the coolest person in the whole freaking world right about now. I don't have the guts to do what you just did. Aw, man...

Just do something. It matters more whether you go at it with a lot of oomph than whether you do this or that or what.

I'ma going to guess that you'll get back into health insurance faster for yourself and family if you go with dog trainer. All the creative writing stuff I can think of is nothing but freelance work, which ain't bad if ya got contacts.

My gut feeling is always "do what you love!" But I also understand the financial realities you are facing. I solved this dilemma by working for a temporary service until I found a job I love. Freelance writing and dog training are both things you can do "on the side" while making ends meet.

Is there something else you would enjoy doing that offers insurance that is more up your alley? (e.g. public relations, which would incorporate your writing skills, possibly for an animal organization)

I haven't heard of a pet insurance company in RI (assuming you live there because of your moniker), but something like that might be able to combine your knowledge with your love. Just a thought.

At the end of the day, though, you only have one life, and I agree with the others. Signing up with the temp. service at least got me up, out and moving, and now I have a job I really love and write on the side (and have my dog at home whom I love and enjoy tremendously). There is a quote that is attributed to Oprah that says, "You can have it all. You just can't have it all at once." Good luck on your journey!

Dear Cape Cod,
Welcome to mid-life! LOL! I'm 40 years old and I did the same thing. After 16 years in retail and food service management, I simply got sick and tired of it and quit. I am now back in college studying for my e-commerce degree in computers and Internet design.
However, unlike you, my wife and I have no kids and my wife can 'bring home the bacon' until I graduate.
I would avoid the creative writing or dog training, both are very poor insofar as market demand. How about become a creative writing teacher? How about managing a Petsmart store? I love to build web pages, but if I did ONLY that, I wouldn't make any money. So, I'm going into e-commerce where I can still design web pages, but also know everything about on-line buying and selling.

Good Luck!

If you don't have to worry about income at this point...like you have a partner with income or can get a part time job to supplement. I would definitely go for the dog trainer. I don't know much about it, but I do know from my own experience that it is much better and your life personally is much more satisfying when you are doing what you love.

I had one income just me and took a flying leap to start out on my own doing what I love. I struggled for a long time, including being in the system. But now I have steady income, can pay all my bills and have extra to spare. The best part is I wake up everyday smiling, knowing I no longer hate waking up. My kids are happier, I am happier. It was well worth it.

Do what you love. Life is short enough as it is, Do you want to spend the next 20 years doing something different but still hating it? Probably not. I admire and respect you for having the courage to follow your dreams and quit your job. Try possibly training dog full time and writing when you have spare time. Take some time to figure out which one you love more and go with that one. Good Luck!!!!

Well, from what I have learned (I also wanted to be a dog trainer) it's very hard to get a job and it doesn't pay very much. However, I'm a strong believer in doing things that will make you happy! Have you thought about working at a vet or a grooming place? There are plenty of ways to still work with dogs and make some decent dough...

Just a suggestion...

You live once, and you already spent 20 yrs doing something that you didn't like.
Why not spend the next 20 doing something that you DO like!

Make sure the family eats their veggies, dresses appropiately, and takes vitamin supplements to ensure good health, until you get something with full benefits again, look into health aide in the mean time.

Good Luck! ♥

Chances are that if you pursue what you love, you'll eventually be much more successful than just doing a job for the security. Pursue your love and you can have your cake and eat it too. Why not do the dog training, breeding etc., and write about it also, advice books, stories etc.
