Democrats - pro-big government and more government programs. Also progressive taxation and more taxation. They tend to believe that the economy needs to be changed or moved to be fixed
Republicans - pro-small government and less government programs. Taxes from Republicans tend to be flat tax-style. They believe that if you cut taxes and give more of the people's money back that they'll spend more and inevitably, help the economy more.
I used to be a far leftist. I'm slowly turning rightist economics wise. I don't support George W. Bush, but some Conservative views I can match with my own. I consider myself an indipendant, at this time.

The lines between Republican and Democrat or conservative and liberal have become so blurred, it's hard to tell who's who anymore.
The basic conservative philosophy is government control of the masses by an elite. In other words a neat, orderly, managed society.
The liberal philosophy is less government control and little if any taxation.
The Democratic party has never been a liberal party. The only liberal party in America is the Libertarian party.
If you look closely at the Republican and Democratic party they both fall into a conservative philosophy. The Democratic party can better be described as a socialists conservative party, but is most commonly referred to as Liberal. The term Liberal with a capital L, refers to socialism.
Most of the conservative Democrats moved to the Republican party in the 1960s during the civil rights movement. Nearly all of the moderate democrats jumped ship during the Reagan era and joined the Republican party and are now referred to as neocons.
In a nutshell, liberals in America do not have an effective political party. The Libertarian party is just a bit over the edge. The Democratic party has become a socialists party. And, the Republican party is pretty much conservative regardless of all the moderates that cling to it.
I think the whole situation has most people feeling they have no true choices anymore come election time.

Magic Man: I do not believe that there is any real difference between the Republican and Democrat parties, other than to keep themselves in power.
The difference between liberals and conservatives is that one believes him(her)self to be perfect and the other would like to be perfect, but knows he/she isn't.
I think you have chosen wisely to ask people not to 'dis' either party. We do way to much of that. Most of the time a Republican will tell you what a Democrat is, and vice versa, and a liberal will tell you what a conservative is, and vice versa. All claim to know what is best. So be very careful if you decide you want to be one or the other.
I have no party affiliation

The differences are the issues. IE pro life pro choice. Democrats back some things Republicans others. You really have to look at the big picture for a while before you get all the info. I am a conservative republican.
I believe in the morals that the party stands for.

Dems don't think most people are good at making choices and need to be taken care of. They are in support of government having more power. Liberals have even more faith in the ability of government and like to use it as a social engineering tool. The extreme side of the left is Socialism or Communism.
Republicans believe more in the ability of the individual to take care of things and that people for the most part are better off making their own choices for running their lives. Conservatives are more strict on limiting the intrusion of government in our lives and support the rights of the individual. The extreme right would be Libertarian or Anarchists promoting very little or no government.
I am Republican

Dems:Too much talk/not enough action re national security.
Want to regulate everyones life by more, more, more laws.
Not decisive on issues.
Too negative.
No tolerance of religious convictions of citizens.
Repubs:Too much tolerance for corporations/big business.
Not enough real explanation of policy/issues.
Too closed off to the ordinary citizen. Not approachable.
Goes overboard sometimes w/ religious proselytizing.
I am a Republican/Independent, former Dem. I am disgusted with both parties but I have to vote Repub because I believe that Repubs have the chutzpah to get things done.

With respect this is a multi-parter.
Democrats and Republicans are the very same. Power hungry SOBs that once in power are self serving hence we have the mess we have today. I have a propensity to support the Democratic case at the moment.
I am as my name suggests a Humanist and Libertarian.

noooooo.... you're so off in this one. we at the instant are not here choosing sides by way of fact of a few clique. We (as republicans) understand what is going to take place if the Dems get the means they are searching for. they'll make a large number in another u . s . a . that we like. We (US struggling with adult men and ladies) have laid our lives on the line to guard the way of existence that we like. we at the instant are not approximately to sit down down and enable them to take it remote from us.
