I know the original fairy tale was Danish, but what about the Disney version? Because of Sebastian the crab's accent, I'm assuming it's in the Caribbean. What about Eric and the sailors? Are they supposed to be British, Spanish, or French colonizers?

I don't think it takes place in the Caribbean. Just because Sebastian has an accent doesn't mean anything. As someone else mentioned, if one animal had that accent and it took place in the Caribbean, wouldn't they all have that access? Yes, they would. And Sebastian is pretty much the only character with an accent, aside from the chef, Louis, who has a French accent, I believe. Another point- just as people from England travel and settle in the Caribbean, people travel from the Caribbean and settle in England. To me, the entire scene looks like the story takes place somewhere in Europe. I mean, there's traditional castles, cobblestone walkways, carriages, etc. Also, in the scene when Ariel and Eric are in the boat, there's crickets, frogs, mallards, cattails, and then the boat goes through the willow tree "curtain." And trust me, the waters and wildlife can look just as tropical as the Caribbean in places like the Mediterranean. Remember, it's just a fairytale story for kids. They don't expect the 6-year-olds to be like, "Hey, that yellow and blue flounder doesn't look like it's in the right environment!"

They say Under the Sea. They don't specify a place. I don't think Sebastian's accent is due to anything but the fact that they were going to use some Caribbean music themes and need that accent to pull it off. Also, if it was in a certain place wouldn't all the characters have the same accent.

Disney's takes place in the Caribbean, owing to some of the animals that are strictly North American-based only.

i got the feeling tehy are English colonizers (there is alot of info out there, but you have to read the books and the comics to track it all down.
