Rinse them out real well,

and let the kids rub white glue all over them (do this outside or with lots of newspaper around under them.) The kids enjoy the smooshing of the glue all over the sides.

The take pieces of themed fabric (I know you can find nativity scenes and WWJD? fabric) and glue them to the can.

Use the can to give cookies in

It is also very pretty to let the fabric dry on and then go back and glue n beads or sequins in a cross. I once used ice cream containers I washed out, and fabric to cover it. I then cut up pieces of those free CDs and helped the kids hot glue them on to the containers. They were very flashy and pretty.

A filler suggestion: You can also let the kids collect gum tree seed pods and roll them in glitter. They make great disposable ornaments. (I let the kids make and dry them on freezer paper.) Then fill up a tin with cheer.

Another filler: You can also take pine cones and dunk them in hot wax (use one of those coffe cans to hold the hot wax!) They will make good fire starters for someone who has a fireplace.

If you freeze the can full of water and then use a nail and hammer to punch out a design in the can - It makes a pretty candle luminary. you can paint it after you poke the holes in it. (the ice helps the can hold its shape while being punched full of holes.)

If it matches a theme from Sunday school lessons, you could do the song "I'm gonna let it Shine!" where the can is made to look like a bush and you have a paper candle or small flashlight. (paper or silk leaves glued onto can)

you let the kids make their bush out of the can and then when they sing the song they demonstrate the part about "hide it under a bush? Oh no! ..." Then hold up their light to shine (this is very cute with five and six year olds).

Hi, I don't know about you but I love to create useful items with different things from around the house, here are a few ideas for you that I have used coffee cans for, 1- A Toilet Paper holder made with three lg coffee cans, glued together with a hot glue gun, and decorate them however you like, and 2 - gadget holders, use as many as you like, nail them to a board, size of board depends on how many cans you use, hang it in either your basement, garage, or office, you can use it to hold tools, important papers, nuts, bolts, screws, etc or if your crafty like me, you can use them to keep your crafts organized, hope this helps.

The best i can offer you is coffee tin laterns.

1.) paint can black (outside) best with flat paint

2.) make a pattern that you will use a punch, screwdriver or awl to make small holes. Some ideas are snow flakes, patterns of diamonds or other shapes,

3.) place a block of wood inside to back the can when you punch the holes

4.) place a tea light inside for a cool lantern.

You might have them use a strong super glue and make a big cross out of a few cans. Then you could have them paint it and place it somewhere in you yard.
