The smaller hydrocarbons have weaker attractive forces between their molecules, so they have lower boiling points, and come out higher up the column. These forces are called van der Waal's forces.

I'm not sure the attractive forces between molecules are fewer or less penetrative and I wonder whether this is more of an attempt to 'show-off' than a genuine quest for information ask. If genuine - my curiosity is whetted as to why
