People always say step-(mother/father) like it's a curse word, they even tell kids its better to say "step" because their "step" is not their "real" parent. What is real the bozo who left or the caring individulal who is there?

I know what you mean. I recently got married and my 2 1/2 year old son now has a step father (which he loves). Though I do not think my husband is to thrilled. He always refers to himself as step this and step that. I really wish he would just give it up. He has been in my sons life since he was 6 months old. I just wish he would realize that he is a parent, biological or not.

I don't know... maybe the term "step" reminds people that the first marriage and family failed. Maybe people are getting tired of so many failed marriages and remarriages and "blended" families that also produce even more kids and end in divorce. Maybe "step" gets a bad rap because the parents put their love life above the wellbeing of the kids and often don't make good choices the second time around? Maybe people think if you picked a bozo once and made kids with him/her, the second one (step) is probably just another bozo, too.
But I'm not saying this is my opinion.

When I hear "step" I think of Cinderella and there is such a notion of the Cinderrella affect that says step parents are more likely to treat their step children worse than their biological children. Studies have proven the fact yet nothing can be cusation

Look at fairy tales, everything "step" is evil and dangerous.

This, of course, is totally bogus, but preconceived notions are impossible to destroy
