If you are talking about the fireplace surround, most codes require at least 12 inches of non flammable material such as brick, ceramic tile or stone such as granite in all three directions plus a fireproof hearth.

You need to check any local codes.

This would depend if the fireplace is built into the wall. If so in Illinois most codes state 16 to 18 inches on the hearth and the surround there are no real guidelines. Most of the home improvement centers sell whatever you need, whether it be stone, tile, marble, even granite slabs.

What exactly are you trying to do with the fireplace anyway. There are many things you can do or buy to place at or near the fireplace to make it safer, better etc. Give us more to look at for a better answer.
