You can download it safely from Java.com. I downloaded it from there almost a year ago, and it's fine. Java is used for applets to upload, like when you go to yahoo games, ebay also uses it on a couple of their pages. Lots of sites need java to function correctly. So go to java.com, it will ask you a couple of questions, then do the manual download

Java is being used by eBay...sunsoft systems has the Java download.
