Stick a satelite dish on your house and you'll pick up just about anything on Rupert Murdoch's Sky TV empire. Sign up to cable and you can get much the same channels, most of which pump out a lot of US imports within their programme schedules. Point it in the right direction at the right satelite with a large enough dish and you can pick up almost anything in any language.
Generally there are only five TV stations you can pick up with a normal TV - BBC1 and 2, ITV, Channel 4 and Channel 5. Channel 5 can't be picked up in all the country, and Channel 4 can't be picked up in Wales, although its welsh-language equivilent S4C can. If you buy a digital "freeview" box for £25 or so, then you can get a number of extra free channels on your TV including BBC 3 and 4, ITV 2, 3 and 4, More 4, E4 and a number of others.
You do of course need a TV licence in the UK to watch any kind of TV at all, though this covers any number of TVs at one address. The fee seems to go up every year. It's about £150 at the moment I think. That though is a different question entirely.
The basic answer is five normal 'terrestial' channels. American programmes are common on all channels but many months or even years behind their US screenings ('The Simpsons' being a good example), but if you subscribe to digital, cable or satelite TV you can get a lot more.

Cable and Satellite.... probably a few hundred... yes, plenty of American rubbish TV shows and some jolly good gritty British dramas too from time to time.
Normal TV without a digital receiver, cable or satellite, then just the 5.
Sky TV is the main satellite provider and that will set you back around £35.00 per month minimum.

Hi purchase a "free view box" for your TV when you come to England or you may have a digital TV, a few of the digital stations will show American programs like friends or ABC channel will show some programs.
Some of the digital channels show the older American shows like columbo etc.
On the digital network there are about 30+ programs now.

There are 5 basic channels BBC 1 and 2; ITV1 Channel 4 and Five. YOu can also get a package called free view, where you get about 70 odd channels, with about one or two of each style of channel (eg 2 documentary, 2 music). THis is soon going to become compulsiary when buying a tv. You can also get cable or satalite, where if you order all the channels (you can mix and match genres of channels (e.g entertaimnet, movies, documenatry). Then you get about 900 channels.
