During his prime ( most if not all of his novels were serialized, that means they came out in magazines a chapter at a time). People waited with intense interest for the next installment. People on their death bed wanted to live just long enough to read or hear what happened to Little Nell. Not even soap operas or the old time cliff hangers had that kind of power. He got many of his ideas by walking for miles through the foggy, damp, late night streets of London. The man lived to write.

Where have I been? The works by Dickens came out on a monthly basis. People lived and died to read what he wrote. No one really knew when the next Mark Twain book would come out, not even Mr. Clemens, but the Western literary world knew when the next David Copperfield installment would be in print.

I doubt it. Very few books are serialized now and the reason for serializing in the first place was because books were an extravagance. Books are available to anyone willing to go to a library. There are so many books published now about so many different subjects, that it would be impossible for any author to have the enormous popularity of Charles Dickens. Sure we have flash in the pans like Dan Brown or Nicholas Sparks, who "everyone" reads, but none of them are consistently popular to the general public.

There are really two questions bound up in your single question.
The first is, "Will any writer ever achieve the same importance and status in society that Charles Dickens did?" The answer to this is no, as writing and literature are no longer as important in society as they once were, having been supplanted by other media, such as television and movies.
The other question is, "Will any author have the same loyal following as Charles Dickens?" The answer to this question is yes. Stephen King is a good example of a writer who has a legion of fans who await his next work and have made him phenomenally wealthy as a result.

Dudderz i seriously doubt it
Fantasy writers may have a lot of fan following (i am a fantasy lover too), but its one thig to write a fantasy..you transcend logic and normality.I mean where imagination is concerned sky is the limit ...you can imagine any creatures any plot when u r not restricting to this world..but to write an exceptionally entertaining and enthralling novel in a completely 'normal' environment is very difficult task. This is the arena where ur wit comes to play.We do have numerous fantasy writers now philip pullman,,j.k.rowling,Christopher paolini,Clive barker, stephen king,Velrio massimoni,K.A.Applegate..But i doubt u could compare them to Charles Dickens or any other author fot that matter.

Where have you been living? Mark Twain aka Sam Clemens. Edgar Rice Burroughs, H. Rider Haggard, Jules Verne, H.G. Wells, Ned Buntline, so many authors started out the same way that it is almost impossible to state how many had loyal followers. You need to read more history and not comic books.

Times have changed. No one uses magazines to publish their novels anymore. But there are many modern authors now with very established followings. Agatha Christie is the most popular novelist in literary history and second most popular author in British lit history behind only Shakespeare. Is that nothing? I think that that is a pretty decent following.

Well some people just have that mind set and Imagination. Just like some people are just naturally good at math or how others can solve Rubik cubes in seconds, or how some people are amazing artists. Its all about how your mind looks at situations and things. For Example: An Artist looks at things through shapes textures a shadows Someone who is good as Rubix cubes looks at things through a big picture, ect.

Not unless your a giant comic book fan. But proably the work of Stan Lee has done over the years. Even though he is an artist most of the storylines and stories have his last approval. Most of his early things were written by him.

There already is and her name is JK Rowling the authoress of
Harry Potter. Her fans are lined up waiting for the book the day
it is released. Stephen King is pretty much that way, too. It seems that VC Andrews has her dedicated fans.

It may anger the literati, but how about J.K. Rowling?
She has transcended children's authors, and entire websites and countless man-hours of speculation revolve arount 'what she will write next.'
